Lee Sloan
Born into a musical family, Lee started classical piano lessons at the age of five.
He attended the preparatory division of The Manhattan School of Music in New York City, going on to major in piano performance at Berklee College in Boston. Lee later transferred to The Mannes College of Music in New York City, continuing private studies with Josef Raieff at The Juilliard School, and with Grace Castagnetta, a pupil of the renowned pianist, Josef Hofmann.
While living in New York, Lee could be heard performing as a soloist and ensemble member in many of the city’s well-known music venues, including as house pianist at famed jazz club Sweet Basil in Greenwich Village. After moving to the UK, he became a fixture of the jazz scene in London, as well as a sought-after session musician. He collaborated with Michael Hazlewood on a musical theatre adaptation of Mervin Peake's 'Mr. Pye', excerpts of which he recorded for a film production by the BBC. Lee was a featured artist at the Krakow Autumn Jazz Festival, performing and recording as a soloist and in quartet with saxophonist Mikołaj Trzaska, bassist Mark Tokar, and drummer Rick Hollander.
More recently, Lee led a series of live jazz evenings, Jazz At The Calder, performing together with some of London's best and brightest musical talent.
A personal approach to piano teaching
Now that you've decided to begin (or get back to) piano lessons and further your understanding of music, you’ve taken the most important first step. My role is to help you in an efficient and effective way, with a relaxed and friendly approach that makes piano lessons interesting, productive and enjoyable.
I studied classical piano at conservatory level and specialize in jazz and improvisation, but I can help you learn regardless of the musical style that interests you. I have considerable experience of music-related technology, hardware and software, music synthesis and recording studio techniques, should these subjects be of interest. I am also an accomplished guitarist.
Because everyone is different, with different goals and expectations, I adapt lesson content to meet the needs of each student. It's my job to assess where you are and how to help get you to where you want to be.
If you're a very young learner, piano and music lessons are designed to be fun, motivating and purposeful.
